Networking Win98 & WinXP

I have a home network with one Win98 machine, one WinXP
machine, and a DSL modem all connected to a hub. Both
computers can access the internet through the DSL modem
and the Win98 machine can see the WinXP machine but the
WinXP machine cannot ping the Win98 machine. Any ideas on
how to correct this?

When a machine can't be pinged, it's usually because a firewall
program on that computer is blocking access. Check the Win98 machine.

If I understand your network setup, both computers and the DSL modem
connect to a hub, not to a broadband router. The computers probably
get public IP addresses from your DSL provider.

In that case, you need to make sure that other Internet users can't
access you network. One way is to run firewall programs on both
computers that only allow access from your LAN. Another way is to
install the IPX/SPX protocol for file sharing and un-bind sharing from
TCP/IP. I've written a web page with details:
