I have a laptop (win98 2nd Edit with Office 2000) and am
trying to backup files to my desktop with XP prof. and
Office Standard. I've installed a Belkin Direct USB Cable
and set TCP/IP protocols - which work - and Netbios,
Computer names and workgroup names are correct as is
everything else I can think of. Have followed all
insructions and trouble shooting recommendations.
However, the Laptop cannot see the XP machine and while
the XP machine can see the Laptop, it cannot not find the
filepath.
I have administration rights on XP, the IC Firewall is
not connected to the Network and now I am stumped!
What else can I do?
The silly part is I used pc linq softwear and acble to do
this a couple of weeks ago and it worked perfectly.
Any suggestions?
thankx Peter Connolly.

I've written a web site that should help you solve the problem:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot

Please pay particular attention to these sections:

1. Firewalls: Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all
other firewalls while troubleshooting.

2. Protocols: Use only one for File and Printer Sharing. If the
network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing
from all but one of them.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Make sure that it's enabled on all computers.
