Networking Win2000Pro to XP-Home w/Router

Dave M.

I have a router that is connected to 2 computers: Desktop runs XP-Home;
Laptop runs Win2000Pro. Currently both computers can access the internet
(DSL) connection via a router and both computers can print via a printer
plug on the router to the same printer.

I'm trying to find an easy way, if possible, of allowing the two computers
to share files, ie, Word docs, Excel Spreadsheets, & perhaps some jpg files
on each computer. I'm happy to allow each computer to access the primary
hard drive on each computer. I'm not concerned about security within my 2
computer network - I would be concerned though if I was, in any way, exposed
to problems from the internet.

I would appreciate any tips on how I could accomplish this. Thanks in
advance.

Thanks for your reply, but the article/link is not terribly helpful. I went ahead and used the wizard within XP-Home to set-up the home network connection. I really have no clue how to do it within Win2000Pro... the article/link doesn't tell one how and I went to the instructions/help within Win2000Pro and didn't have much luck there either.

I'm hoping there's an easy way to make the computers share w/ each other. I'm reasonably capable of following instructions if I have some clear instructions to follow. I'd appreciate any other help/tips you or anyone else could provide. Thanks in advance.

After more fiddling around, I am able to see the Desktop (Win XP-home) from the Laptop (Win2000Pro) when I'm in Network Places/Entire network. I cannot however see the laptop computer from the desktop network places. On the desktop, network places, I can see the files that are suppose to be shared with the other computer.

Although I can see the desktop computer from the laptop computer, I cannot see any of the files that are suppose to be shared. On both computers, I have enable "file share" for the drives that I am trying to share... Thanks again for any additional tips you might be able to provide.

'Can not see', what does that mean ?

Q:
1. You can access the folder, but there are no files in it ?
2. You can see the drive, but can not access the drive ?

A:
?

Does the laptop 'see' itself when going thru the LAPTOPS Network Places?
Does the desktop 'see' itself in the 'My Network Places'?
Do they have the same Workgroup Name?
Can you browse the other computer if in the Address bar of WINDOWS
explorer you enter: \\(shared computer name) in the address bar and
press return ?

DanS said:
'Can not see', what does that mean ?

By that I mean, when I'm in the network places folder, I do not see any
computer icon that refers to the laptop computer. However, when I'm in the
network places folder on the laptop, I can see (when clicking on entire
network link) an icon with the computer name of the desktop computer. - - I
hope that makes sense...?? ****ooops - revise that last statement. I went
to the laptop to see if I could see any reference to the name of the laptop
computer.... there wasn't any, and while I was searching around for a way to
add the Laptop computer name on the Network in "My Network Places" somehow I
lost the Icon for the desktop computer; so the desktop Icon is no longer
there on the laptop in "My Network Places"...
Q:
1. You can access the folder, but there are no files in it ?
2. You can see the drive, but can not access the drive ?

A:
1. What I mean, is I mentioned in my answer above, is that I see an
Icon for the desktop computer, but whether I click on that, or anything
else, I do not/cannot see any of the files on the hard drive I'm trying to
share.

2. Again, what I'm seeing is a computer Icon with the name of the desktop
computer. I don't think that qualifies as seeing the drive... (***see
revision comments above - re disappearing Icon)
Does the laptop 'see' itself when going thru the LAPTOPS Network Places?

No it does not. - - - - I think I need some simple directions, if they
exist, on how to add the Laptop to the the "Work Group/Network on the
Laptop. (The Laptop uses WinPro2000.)

Does the desktop 'see' itself in the 'My Network Places'?

Yes, the desktop does "see" itself in the "My Network Places". I'm sure
the reason that does, and why I was able to handle it, is the "Network
Wizard" added it for me. Unfortunately there's no wizard on the
Win2000Pro...
Do they have the same Workgroup Name?

I just re-named the desktop workgroup to "Home Network" and then I went to
the laptop to do the same. I went into control panel/system/identification
and selected "workgroup" under the computer identification and also typed in
"Home Network". The laptop rebooted for the change to take effect. I
entered the password I always use at start-up, but now I cannot log onto my
laptop. It gives me the error message to make sure my logon name and
password are correct, etc...

Now, I've got real problems!!! I can't logon in Safe Mode or any other way.
I'd say this problem is now taking priority over my earlier feeble attempts
to get my two computers to share information. Any ideas on how I can get
through the log-on screen? Hope you can help.

Can you browse the other computer if in the Address bar of WINDOWS
explorer you enter: \\(shared computer name) in the address bar and
press return ?

After my above mishap, ie., locking myself out of my laptop, I tried tthis
step. Anyway, when I enter \\(shared computer name) in the address bar
of my desktop computer, I get the dialogue box: Connecting to (My
computer-laptop); it asks for username and password. I enter the ones I
formerly used for my laptop and it doesn't go anywhere. So, somehow I seem
to have changed the password, but I'm sure I didn't actually do that....

Once again, thanks in advance, if you or anyone, can bail me out of this
problem.

That's quite odd and I can't say I've seen it before. You can try
prefixing the username with the computer name, and/or the OLD workgroup
name. I haven't done that in a long time and can't remember if it's:

(computername)\(username)
or
(net name)\(username)
or is it . instead of \ or is it / ?

I can't remember.

If none of that works, I'd d/l this utility:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/
which will allow you to change the password of ANY account on a Win2K
system to anything of your choice. It will change the password without
having to know the existing password. AND, it even works with the
Administrator account.

Even if one of the above login's works, this disk is always a good thing
to keep around. It's a 3.5" boot disk, so you'll need one of those. I've
used this tool several times.

Dan -

Thank you very much! I downloaded the utility program and was able to get
back into the laptop (WinPro2000).

Now, I feel like I'm getting much closer to making this home network
function, but I have a couple real basic questions:

What is the difference between "Microsoft Windows Network" and "Computers
Near Me"?

Should I be using either one of these?

For a while, I think I was able see files on my desktop from my laptop by
using Windows Explorer, but now for some reason I cannot see them.

The following are the directories I see on my two computer in "Network
Places" (Mapped Network)

"Desktop":

Network Places

Entire Network

+ Microsoft Terminal Services

- Microsoft Windows Network

+ MSHome (Group Icon i.,e, 3 computers)

Web Client Network

Home Network (Icon looks like scanner or a box) [Includes Shared C:
Drive on Desktop Computer]

MSHome on Laptop Computer (Folder Icon) (Can't access
anything w/ this icon)

My Groups

Shared Docs on Desktop (Folder Icon - I had this on Computer b-4
trying Home Network)

---------------------------------

"Laptop Computer":

My Network Places

Entire Network

Microsoft Windows Network

Home Network

Computers Near Me

Home Network

Btw, "Home Network" was the name I tried to put on both computers to
recognize the new network. MSHome was the previous "network name" I had
created. Making things more confusing, mshome was also the shortcut I used
to reference the "shared C drive" on each computer. I hope the above
formatting/indenting was able to hold when posted to the newsgroup;
otherwise it will probably make no sense at all. Thanks for any further
help with this.

Okay, I just about have it all working A-okay except for 2 problems.

First off, I have the same named network "Home" working on both the desktop
& the laptop. Under each computer, I see the list of the following on both
computers:

"Desktop":

Home Network-

Documents
Shared Documents
Printers & Faxes
Scheduled Tasks

"Laptop":

Home Network-

Documents
Printers & Faxes

Now for my two problems:

1) I cannot open the Shared Documents folder (A Desktop Folder) from my
laptop; it will open on the desktop though & is listed in the network list.
Incidentally, the Shared Folder shows up on the Laptop Network list, but
when I try to open it, I get the error message: "\\desktop\shareddocs is
not accessible - access denied" - Any ideas on correcting this problem?

2) When I regained access to my laptop using the utility program you
recommended, somehow a new ID has been assigned to me; so, all my prior
Word Docs, Exel Spreadsheets, & Jpg. photos are not showing up in any
obvious places. Is there a way I can track them down & re-assign them
somehow? I can't imagine that the simple utility process deleted those
files.

Btw, I've learned quite a bit about this process thanks to your guidance.
Thanks again for any additional help you can provide.

Tom-

Thanks again for replying.

Re: Problem #1 < Inability to Access Shared Doc File on WinXP-Home Desktop
from Laptop (Win2000Pro): I did what the "1st link" you provided (below)
said, but found that my "guest account" was already "enabled".

So, I went to the "2nd link" (below) you provided and completed both
Method's #1 and #2 on my desktop computer that is running WinXP-Home. I
did not change anything on the laptop which runs WinXP Pro, assuming I did
not need to. Also, I re-booted both the laptop and the desktop
mputers. - - - - Well, I still get the exact same error message:
\\desktop\shareddocs is not accessible - access denied

Is there anything else that I should do that would enable the laptop to
access the desktop "shareddocs folder"? Thanks in advance for any help you
can provide.

Btw, please see my other post in microsoft.public.windowsxp.general re:
my problem #2; I have provided more details on how the problem arose.
Thanks.

or is it . instead of \ or is it / ?

I can't remember.

If none of that works, I'd d/l this utility:
http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/
which will allow you to change the password of ANY account on a Win2K
system to anything of your choice. It will change the password without
having to know the existing password. AND, it even works with the
Administrator account.

Even if one of the above login's works, this disk is always a good
thing
to keep around. It's a 3.5" boot disk, so you'll need one of those.
I've
used this tool several times.

Dan -

Thank you very much! I downloaded the utility program and was able to
get back into the laptop (WinPro2000).

"Desktop":

Network Places

Entire Network

+ Microsoft Terminal Services

- Microsoft Windows Network

+ MSHome (Group Icon i.,e, 3 computers)

Web Client Network

Home Network (Icon looks like scanner or a box) [Includes Shared
C: Drive on Desktop Computer]

MSHome on Laptop Computer (Folder Icon) (Can't access
anything w/ this icon)

My Groups

Shared Docs on Desktop (Folder Icon - I had this on Computer b-4
trying Home Network)

---------------------------------

"Laptop Computer":

My Network Places

Entire Network

Microsoft Windows Network

Home Network

Computers Near Me

Home Network

Btw, "Home Network" was the name I tried to put on both computers to
recognize the new network. MSHome was the previous "network name" I had
created. Making things more confusing, mshome was also the shortcut I
used to reference the "shared C drive" on each computer. I hope the
above formatting/indenting was able to hold when posted to the newsgroup;
otherwise it will probably make no sense at all. Thanks for any further
help with this.

Okay, I just about have it all working A-okay except for 2 problems.

First off, I have the same named network "Home" working on both the desktop
& the laptop. Under each computer, I see the list of the following on both
computers:

"Desktop":

Home Network-

Documents
Shared Documents
Printers & Faxes
Scheduled Tasks

"Laptop":

Hi Dave,

Thanks for your update.

If you create and share a folder in c:\, such as C:\ABC, could you access
it successfully via network? If not, you may need to run the Network Setup
Wizard. For more information, please see:

You receive an error message when you try to access a shared folder on a
network computer that is running Windows XP Home Edition

Hope this helps!

Thanks.
