Hi all; a friend of mine has tried to connect his laptop to his PC using a
crossover cable. When he hooked up the units, both were asking for a
password to log in, even though he has not had to enter one previously.
People have mentioned previously about having the same password on both
units and making sure that both units are in the same workgroup. As this did
not work, he has decided to give up, and removed the NIC card from the PC.
The problem is - the machine is STILL asking for a password, and he can't
get into it.
Is there any solution?

John

Hello,

First you need to have the same Workgroup name under
System Network Identification but with different computer
names.

Second, what kind of op sys is on the laptop? If XP is
involved you need to make sure that the network settings,
local area connections, TCP/IP, firewall is unchecked

If another PC has a personal firewall you need to disable
that also. Unless you have the firewalls configured to
all each other access you are going to get the password
issue.

Third, enjoy you connectivity

Hi John

He must have created an admin password when he installed WIN2K, it won't
let you install without it IIRC. Can't he login as Administrator?

Using the two PCs networked together he should have added an
account/password for each PC on the other PC i.e. PC 1 has user/password
fred/john on PC 1 on PC 2 he creates a user/password of fred/john and vice
versa.

Hi Bill, you get about a bit! I've just had a pint with my mate, and I have
misread the situation slightly. Apparently I set up the PC with Win2000 and
put in a user password. When the PC boots up, it logs straight into Windows
without the need to enter the password. However, for the life of me I cannot
remember what password I chose. I must have told my mate, but as he never
had to enter it, he's forgotten it too!
He wants to now install Win XP on the PC, but he needs some data from the
machine so I cannot reformat and install. Is it possible to set up a dual
boot with win2000 and XP, get the data from the machine and then wipe it
clean and start again?
Otherwise, I will have to try and get hold of a Linux boot disk or recovery
programme or similar to try to reset the password.
On to plan BE!
Cheers Bill,
John

Hi John

Yes, if he's forgotten the password and can't login then I'm afraid it's
down to password recovery. There's some info and links here
http://snipurl.com/3k65 on password recovery.

Hello,

I had the same problem. I linked my Win 98 laptop to my
win 2K desktop using a crossover cable. Basically I
wanted to use my CD drive in my desktop to install
software onto my laptop. Once I had shared the drive I
had to creat a user (and password) for my desktop and then
log in as that user on the laptop. Once that was done I
tried to map the network drive from the laptop. When it
asked me for a password I used the one I had created on
the desktop to share that drive with.

Took me a while.

Thanks for the feedback evilobiwan.

Thanks Bill, that's the site I looked at yesterday and got the boot disk
from. My mate won't be comfortable doing that, so I'll have to have a good
look at it and do it myself at the weekend.

John

You shouldn't have any problems with it, it's fairly straight forward.

Hi Bill, went round to my mate's and lo and behold, after about 10 goes we
got it to work - the problem being that after we reset the password, we
didn't realise that you had to end the prog with '!', and it kept asking us
again and again for a new password!!.
After that we got into the machine OK. However, when we hooked up the
crossover cable, we still could not communicate. The PC was given the same
username and password as the laptop. The PC has a 'workgroup' domain name.
The laptop is used remotely by my mate and at work over a network, and has
about 4 logins. When we logged onto the laptop, there was no 'workgroup' set
up, so we clicked on it in 'My Computer' properties etc. and rebooted the
laptop. Now, none of the other domains appear at the login prompt, and the
flipping password is not recognised. My mate is taking it into work tomorrow
and asking the techie there to reset it to the way it was!
We'll get there in the end (I think!)
Best wishes
John
