I have one WinXP Home and one Pro PCs connected through
the wireless router, which's in turn connected to a cable
modem. Pro PC connected to the router with CAT-5 cable,
whereas Home laptop connected wirelessly.
Both PCs can connect to the internet, but have problems
seeing each other for file and printer sharing. And the
worst part is that the problem is intermittent. One time
they can see each other, but after rebooting or idling for
a long time the connection disappears. When connection is
broken, sometimes I can ping the other PC, sometimes I
can't. I can always ping the router, though. Both PCs have
all the latest Windows upgrades and patches. The router
set up to use DHCP for assigning IP addresses. My NetBIOS
is enabled and Windows firewall turned off. I don't have
any 3-rd party firewall software running on any system
either.

I tried everything I know and played around alot - nothing
helps. It drives me nuts. Microsoft, please HELP.

Jacob, I hope to see the answer to your question. I have
the same problem, what I have found is the DHCP router has
been enabled and was set to four hours, and that windows
dhcp was enabled. (even though I told it I don't know how
many times not to enable dhcp on the computer...IT feature
of thinking they know more than me and keep turning on #(*$
because thats what they want)

When I tried disabling windows DHCP, my computer loses all
connections to the router and IPCONFIG finds nothing. I can
keep my reboots down to one day by setting the DCHP renew
to 1 day, but its only a temporary fix.

I found this problem by examining the System Events viewer,
hope this might help more with your problem.
