Is it possible to connect two machines using a serial
connection? I have a user who wants to do this but once
they get it connected then would they just share files or
do they need to telnet into the machine? What equipment
would they need...???

I vaguely remember doing this a while back. You need to set up a "direct
cable connection", I did this in win98se, but I'm using XP now so I don't
remember much. I googled to get the link below and from what I've looked at
it seems like what I did. Once its set up its just file and print sharing as
with any other network connection.

I would point out that its _slow_ though. Your user may be better served
buying a couple of cheap NICs and a crossover cable (very easy to set up and
fast to use), or even a USB connecting cable (easy to set up, although I've
had them be a bit temperamental), _much_ quicker, and all they wouldn't cost
much more equipment wise than a serial null modem cable.

Is the speed degradation also true if using the parallel ports?
