I tried using ethernet cables, but apparently i need
a 'crossover' cable, so I am wondering if I can connect
two computers with a phone line? Should I run the line
directly from one to the other, or run them both into the
jacks on the wall...? I have XP Home and XP Pro (one on
each). Thanks

You can't network the computers by connecting their modems to each
other with a wire -- you'd need a pair of phone line network adapters.

It would be much easier and less expensive to get a crossover Ethernet
cable. It should be in stock at a computer store or large office
supply store near you.
