Networking software problem

Dell inspiron 6400 with built in wireless.

When I go to the dialog to configure wireless networks, "Change the order of
preferred networks" it is blank. So I manually configure my network. When I
close the dialog, a few moments later the wireless connects and all is fine.

I drive through to work and go back into the dialog and the list is blank.
So I enter my work's network details and wait - nothing. Go back into the
dialog and it is blank again, so I re-enter the work's network details and
close and nothing. Back into dialog and blank again. I enter the details a
thirds time, then select it on the list and press properties and crash!

Drive home and my home network is not detected - I have to type it in again,
wait a minute or two and voila, it connects! Go back into the dialog and
nothing is listed, even though it is connected!

Another thing it does is the yellow popup from the system tray pops up to
tell me there are networks in range, when I open the dialog, there are none
listed. I believe there are 3 that is should 'see'.

Clearly the wireless networking software is not working, but I don't know
what to try. Do I re-install - how? I removed the device from the device
manager and rebooted and it re-installed itself (correct drivers as far as I
can tell). But the problem is the same.

Help!

perhaps try using the Windows only method.

What method is that? If you are referring to the "Let Windows Manage my
wireless networks" (or something like that) option, then I have that
ticked - this is the dialog I describe above.
