Networking Setup Problem

I had a problem with a Dell desktop computer, so I reinstalled Windows XP
Home and reformatted the disk.

When I run the network setup wizard, I get to the page that says "Select the
statement that best describes this computer." I then click the second
button, namely, "This computer connects to the internet through a
residential gateway...". This is correct, as I have this computer connected
to a router.

However, after I have finished the setup, I can go back to the beginning of
the wizard, and the computer has apparently changed the selection to "This
computer connects directly to the Internet...." This does not work, and
apparently stops the internet from working from two other computers in my
house. (One is attached to the router and the other is wireless.)

Does anybody have any idea what would cause the button to change, or how to
set up the computer that the button doesn't change.

Thanks,

Just forget the stupid Wizards and configure the Nic (LAN Connection) for
automatic addressing.

If the "router" has multiple ports (like 4) then that is a built in Switch.
Plug the machines into those ports. If it doesn't have multple ports that
buy a hub or switch, plug the "router" and al the machine into it. The
Hub/Switch will be the "center" of the network.

Turn off the stupid Windows Firewall on *all* the machines until you verify
that everything works properly first. If there are third-part firewalls on
the machines, then *uninstall* it (disabling isn't good
enough),...re-install when everything is verified to work properly first.

A router isn't a 'residential gateway' as far as I know... I set all to
'directly connnected' and let the DHCP server on the router sort them out...
I've never used the 'residential gateway' setting...
