I have Windows XP Professional on a PC and a laptop. In
the PC, there is a USP Broadband modem connecting to BT
Broadband. There is also a Fast Ethernet card. I am trying
to set up a wireless network. The PC is connected to a
Linksys Wireless G Router by an ethernet cable between the
router and the ethernet card. I have a wireless cardbus
adaptor in the laptop. Having installed and set up all the
software, it is possible to see the Workgroup name in each
computer, but only its own computer name. I was hoping to
see both computer names in each computer under the
Workgroup folder. Signal in the laptop from the router is
excellent.
I cannot figure out what I have done wrong. Can someone
post a step-by-step guide to re-install, or suggest
something specific I should check? Many thanks.

One area to investigate is the setup options for the wireless router. Some
routers/access points have a setting that allows them to separate wireless
machines from wired machines. Another thing to double-check would be to make
sure that your PC's Ethernet card is plugged into one of the LAN ports on
the router (as opposed to the WAN or "Internet" port).

Finally, you might double-check the two computers to make sure they don't
have ICF or another firewall preventing them from reaching each other. For
ICF, the ports to open to enable file sharing and browsing traffic are:

UDP 137
UDP 138
TCP 139
TCP 445

Hope this helps.
