I have a simple home network, my comp (Host) Sons comp (Client) connected
via crossover. We are both XP users and I have an adsl connection. whenever
my son switches his machine off after using the internet I have to go
through a routine on my comp (host) create network connection>then I see the
network bridge disappear> then I get a message saying cannot create
network>then I try create network connection again and it creates me another
network bridge with a higher number than the one before. This is ridiculous,
how can we remain connected without me having to go through this procedure?
and how do I retain control over access?

Not sure if it helps or not, but I had similar experiences with XP, finally
resolved.

You do not say if you are using a router or usb modem for the ADSL, I use
USB modem

Are you using fixed IP address on each machine

Are you configuring the network manually or letting Windows Wizard do it for
you.

Are your disks configured as NTFS partitions

I found problems in letting Windows automate everything, with the ADSL
connection Windows always tried to create a Bridge. I found that stopping
the Windows Wizard and deleting the created bridge then setting the advanced
properties of the ADSL connection to allow internet sharing manually to be
more efficient and successful

On the host machine a had to create a fixed IP for that machine (manually)
and on the client I had to run the Windows wizard so that Internet sharing
was available. Then I noticed that if I changed the clients IP to a fixed
IP it would automatically lose the Internet sharing why is beyond me ? so I
left it on auto.

Other problems appeared to be related to having NTFS partitions and wouldn't
allow the client to connect to the host had t manually adjust the security
settings to disable login to console only....can't remember exactly how (in
control panel) will look it up again and let you know.

It is also worth looking at:
www.practicallynetworked.com or http://www.careyholzman.com/netfixes.htm

My conclusion is the Windows networking wizard sucks and provides little
help for beginners, unless you are one of the lucky ones and Windows detects
everything correctly first time....This network thing has given me a lot of
grieve at home connecting two machines peer to peer, but at work I have had
no problems connecting 10 machines to hub and router and configuring access
rights and sharing......
