I am trying to wirelessly network my PC ( wired) and my laptop (Wireless). I can see my PC on my laptop as a workgroup pc but it will not allow me to access it saying the network path is wrong. When I went to map the network drive and tried to put in my laptop setting which is MSHOME, the "OK" butgton was greyed out. Can anyone help with this please?

Did you run the Windows XP Home networking wizard to set up the network originally, or did you do it manually?

I have XP pro on the desktop and XP home on the laptop. Damn!
Sorry ... I'm no expert, but we here at PCReview are seeing more and more people having 'problems' with setting up, and maintaining, their wireless network. It is getting silly ... reminds me of the 'hoops' you had jump through getting Win95 drivers.

MS in their wisdom did not see fit to give you what you need to make XP Home easily join a network. Money I suppose.

It can be done, and as I said I'm no expert ... if you followed my link, and it did not work, then you're basically on your own.

We do have a couple or three good networking masters here, if you're willing to wait for one, they may be able to help.

There is the other end of the scale ... some just work ... bloody annoying when you see that.

If you can use "cable" or shall I say "wired" network, then you'll stand a better chance ... again, I know not why, but wired networks are easier.

Thanks for all your help. I did try, after reading that article, to set up a wireless transfer by USB flash drive. All went ok and I could see my desktop from my laptop but it won't give me permission to access it. It says I need an administrator's password. I'm the only bloody ( excuse the French) person who uses it and I don't use a password. I have transferred some files via USB flash, but what I really want to do is to be able to use my laptop with my desktop printer and without networking, i don't see how it can be done.

My usual response is ... get a router/hub ... but as I have said, I am no expert and have no need for wireless.

On the few occasions I have set-up a wired network, incl' Home connecting to Pro, all that was needed was to turn them on ... even with different WorkGroups both could be 'seen' ... it was then a matter of file sharing & sharing the printer.

I never had a problem with a wired network. I used to just plug-in and be done. The last time I did one was a couple of years ago, now everybody "needs" wireless. :D

My brother called me over a few months ago to "help" with his network ... when I saw he was using wireless, I went and put the kettle on ... and left him to it. He now has a wired network. :p

As I said ... wait, and you may get one of our more knowledgable people who can help better. :thumb:

Just my 2 cents, or lowest Euro denom.

Remote Desktop maybe,...

To allow other users to connect to your computer
  1. Open System in Control Panel.
  2. Click the Remote tab.
  3. In the Remote Desktop area, click Select Remote Users....
  4. On the Remote Desktop Users dialog box, click Add....
