My brother is trying to network connect to my computer so we can use the
share folder to pass files but when ever he trys to get into my computer it
brings up a password for my computer that i dont even have, and it does the
same when i try to connect to his.
This indicates that the XP box is not happy with the
'credentials' (username / password ) which the
connecting computer is supplying.
How to fix it:
1) Simple File Sharing
If the XP box is XP home, or XP Pro with Simple File Sharing enabled
(default),
then you should not get this. All incoming connections are treated as
'Guest'.
You must simply ensure you have not disabled the 'Guest' account, or
passworded it.
If you have disabled it, re-enable it.
If you have passworded it, supply the Guest account password to the IPC$
prompt.
If this fails, re-run the network setup wizard to re-enable sharing .
2) No simple file sharing.
If you are using XP Pro in non-simple filesharing mode,
you must create a user account / password which matches the logon username /
password on the other machine.
Then it depends on what OS you are attempting to connect from:
Win9x: You must log on to windows with the correct credentials.
2000/XP: You will get prompted for credentials if it's wrong.
