This is just a personal observation. I have spent
countless hours on my problem listed below. I have
posted on this newsgroup and other forums. I have
received mutltiple suggestions and ideas and I greatly
appreciated everyone's hlep. To date, nothing has
worked. I have jumped through a lot of hoops to make
this work, to no avail.

Shouldn't this idea of "sharing" on the network be a
simple exercise? All I want to do is share a printer and
a couple of file folders.

Sorry for venting, but this is beyond riduculous. I feel
that I have missed some minor thing that is prevented me
from getting this to work and I am very frustrated.

Original post:

I have a desktop running ME assigned as "Family", with a
printer attached. I have a laptop running XP Home
assigned as "Dell" They are both on a wireless network
connected to a router/access device from Linksys. I want
to share files and the printer. I have set up sharing
on both computers. The ME "Family" can see all of the
share files on the XP "Dell". The XP "Dell" sees
the "Family" on the network when I Explore and/or view
workgroup computers. When I go to view the "Family" I
get the following: "\\Family is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this server to find out if
you have access permissions. The network path is not
found."

I am stumped at this point. I have spent hours trying to
make this work. Since I can ping each computer, I feel I
have the network configured correctely (I hope). How do
I grant permission for the XP "Dell" to access the share
files and printer on the ME "Family" desktop?

Any help/suggestions is greatly appreciated.

You're not alone. However, I can access other machines
after start-up. If my machine sits for a while I then
lose access to other machines. Crazy...

When I go to view the "Family" I
get the following: "\\Family is not accessible...

There are a lot of people with the same problem and frustration. I agree
with you. It is so hard to figure out why networking doesn't work, when it
should be so simple. (I hate that message because it doesn't give you any
clue on what's wrong or where to look).

First, can I clarify your setup? Do they have the same workgroup name? Are
both computers using simple file sharing? (on the Tools menu of My Computer,
Folder Options, View tab, scroll to the bottom). Do you have Internet
Connection Firewall (ICF) turned off on both computers? ( on the Advanced
tab of Local Area Connection Properties). Do you get an error message when
you enter the following command at the command prompt?

C:\> net view \\Family

If you answered my questions with 5 Yes's, then the problem is a (probably a
non-Microsoft) program is blocking it.

The first thing I'd try is booting up in Safe mode with Networking and test
to see if you get the problem. This will not fix the problem, but may give
you some clues about which program is the culprit.

Next, at the Start menu, Run line, enter msconfig to run the System
Configuration Utility. Disable All the Services and Startup items. In
particular pay attention to anything to do with networking or routing or
firewalls, etc. and reboot. If you get it to work, turn on one item at a
time and reboot until you find the problem.

Symantec agrees with the last post. I think it is my
Norton Firewall conflicting with some other program that
browses the network. Now I just have to find the
culprit...

I've been fighting the same problem for weeks now and it's most
frustrating....I could answer yes to all but your last question. When I
tried the net view command I got a "System error 5 has occurred." How do I
find out what system error 5 is?
