Hi guys,

I would like to network together my Win Me desktop and My Win XP
Laptop, the problem I have is that I haven't got a clue how to do it. Both
machines have onboard Ethernet ports and I've bought the cable to go between
the 2. Assuming that I have to set one up as a server, I would prefer it to
be the ME machine. Can anyone explain to me how to do this, or do you know
of a downloadable step by step guide anywhere.

Many thanks
Matt

this may help. quoted from http://www.ChicagoTech.net
How to setup home or peer-to-peer network

If all of the computers in a peer-to-peer workgroup don't have a common
networking protocol, a common workgroup, and common user names and
passwords, the computers may experience a difficulty to communicate with
other computers that are running Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows 95, or
Microsoft Windows 98. To resolve this issue, configure the computers by
ensuring that they have a common networking protocol (TCP/IP), a common
workgroup, and common user names and passwords. Also make sure enable File
and Printer Sharing is installed.

Thanks for the info, but it is difficult for me to grasp as I am a complete
novice. I've been reading through some of the other posts on this group and
few things have become apparant. At the moment, all I have are the 2
machines and a piece of cable. Is it correct that a direct connection
cannot be made and that I need something called a crossover cable or a hub.
If so, can anyone give me any idea of the cost involved. I thought that I
could follow the wizard on XP (laptop) create a disk and upload on the ME
machine from the disk. The problem is that the laptop doesn't have a floppy
drive. Can this disk be made on a CD? Sorry to ask so many questions, but
like I said, I'm a complete idiot...... eerrrrrr I mean beginner.

Cheers
Matt

crossover cable cost you less than $10. you don't need use wizard so that
you don't need a floppy.
