I have followed Microsoft's online instructions for
directly connecting my two computers. However, the
option to use my NIC and a cross-over cable is not
covered. How can I get the files from one computer to
the other using a cross-over cable.

What I did was switching on Internet Connection Sharing om my main PC
(XP Home Edition), this is also the PC with internet access. This
automatically puts an defined IP-address on the NIC to be shared
(192.168.0.1) and gives you an DHCP service on this system.

If you now connect a second system, all you need to do is connect via
cross cable and configure the network card to obtain an IP-address via
DHCP. Works great.

After both systems have initialised there network cards, they are
connected to the network and all usuall options are available. Just
share and attach folders as you do in a big network.

This is exactly my setup at home.
Connect both computers with the crossover cable.
Run the Home Network Wizard, make sure you set the workgroup name EXACTLY
the same on both computers and set at least one folder to share.
If you have NTSF on one computer and FAT32 on the other you can only look
at the FAT32 from the NTSF computer but not the other way around because
FAT32 does not have the ability to read NTFS.
I also share my (56k dialup) internet connection, you have the option to
set that when you follow the Home Network Wizard.

Good luck
