This issue has no doubt been discussed many times in the past, and I
apologise for failing to find the answer in the message archive or
elsewhere on the web.

I recently bought and installed a new PC running XP.

Initially the PC initially seemed to integrate into my existing small
network without a problem, and I was able to transfer my user data from
my old PC via the network.

Since then something changed, either automatically or through some
intervention from me, and I am no longer able to see the other computers
under My Network Places > Entire Network > Microsoft Windows Network >
Workgroup.

When I try and expand the Workgroup folder by clicking on the + sign it
refuses to open.

Any suggestions?

It could be caused by a firewall, that is easy to verify by temporarily
disabling the firewalls. If the firewall is not at cause this is most
likely a Browser problem, verify that the Browser service is running on
the computer that has the Master Browser duties. When the computer that
is responsible for the Master Browser duties is shutdown you have
another computer (the Backup Browser) that is supposed to take over the
Master Browser duties, verify that one of your machines has the Backup
Browser role. To find the problem you may need to enable the Browser
Service on all the machines then look in the Event Viewer logs for
possible errors.

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

I temporarily disabled the XP firewall and Kaspersky, but the problem
persists.

In case it helps diagnosing the problem here is a screenshot of the
error message I get when I try and expand the Workgroup folder:

I'm not familiar with the Browser Service you mentioned, and I can't
find anything in the Windows online help - do you have any further pointers?

Go in the Services management console (enter services.msc in the Run
box) and check that the Computer Browser service is started. You can
also start the the Browser service at a command prompt by issuing:

net start browser

Check it one machine at a time, you may have to start it on all machines
to get to the root of the problem, look in the Event log for errors.

I can confirm that the Computer Browser service is running on both
computers.

The System page of the Event Viewer shows no errors.

Any other suggestions?

I ran the Network Identification Wizard again and I am pleased to report
that it seems to work OK now 8-)
