I have a home network consisting of 1 computer with Windows ME and an
HP4050tn printer connected to each other and the internet via a D-Link
router. Everything was running great until yesterday. I attempted to add
VPN support to my computer, using Control Panel ==> Add/Remove Programs ==>
Add/Remove Windows Components. I was told to reboot to complete setup.

Here's where the problems start. Realize I now have no connection to the
internet. I try running the Internet Connection Wizard. No luck. I try
running the Home Networking Wizard. Still no luck. I try pinging my router
from the ms-dos prompt. That works. I ping my printer and localhost, both
also good. I go to my network properties and remove everyhting and add back
my nic card, tcp/ip, and client for microsoft networks. Nothing. I fire up
my netrok scanner, thinking I'll see if I can scan localhost, the printer,
and the router. I get an error message telling me there is a UDP socket
error. Still no internet. Decide to try and print something to my printer.
It's not working. I can ping it, sure, but that's about it.

I'm fresh out of ideas. Anybody else got any?

You need to configure the router to access the Internet. I forget DLink's
router address - could be something like 192.168.0.1. If all else fails
look at the router manual or go online to Dlink.
With only 1 computer, it's a very small NETWORK.
None of the windows wizards can configure the router. You need to set the
router for your ISP settings, i.e., DSL (likely PPPoE) including username
and password, or cable.
Other settings in router should be checked after reading the DLink material
online.

Thanks for your advice. I got it working using some tips I found on
www.careyholzman.com . Was an issue with winsocks. My router has always
worked great. I should have mentioned that I dual boot Linux, so I knew
ahead of time that it wasn't a hardware or a router problem.
