I have a wireless router lynksys (another laptop using xp appears on the
lan) but my new vista laptop does not. I have gone to advanced settings in
norton internet security and added the ip of my lan and the individual ip of
my xp desktop but it doesn't detect the network.

What can I do to get this vista computer on the network?

Make sure the Vista Machine has the same Workgroup name as the others

CONTROL PANEL/SYSTEM and then Change under the Computer Workgroup link to
change settings
