Hi,
I am trying to connect Windows Xp Home Edition laptop with
a windows 98 PC to be able to share printer and files (no
Internet access). I used crossover ethernet cable to
connect directly 2 together: it didn't work, so I used a
hub to connect them: the cable connections are working on
both but their computer names did not appear on each
other's network neighborhood even though their workgroup
name is the same.

The Windows 98 network has Client for Microsoft Networks ,
TCPIP, and Netbeui; the XP network has Client for
Microsoft Networks and TCPIP.

Any idea would be appreciated.

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. Unless you
have a specific reason for using NetBEUI, remove it from Windows 98.
If the network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer
Sharing from all but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:
