must all computers within a small home network run the
same version of windows? my host computer, the one hosting
the ethernet connection, is windows ME. the one im hooking
up is windows xp and it doesnt seem to work, must both
computers run windows xp?

You should be able to run anything you want at home. I would make the
XP machine my gateway machine instead though. The network support is
better than that of ME.

It does not matter what operating systems you have on you
network, they will all work together.

I must admit, it's less headache if they all run the same
os.

No. I networked 2 on a direct cable connection with a broadband Internet
connection for a year. One had XP Home and one Win98SE. Hard to set up, and
needed advice from MS to get it done, but once done it worked fine. The XP
machine set itself up OK, but the Win98SE machine needed a lot of manual
tweaking - as far as I remember, it was mainly that some protocols had not
been installed. As soon as I did this, the whole thing worked a treat.

Best wishes,

I've got two systems connected through a Netgear RT 314
router. The main system, with the printer, is running XP
Pro, the other is 2000 Pro. At one point I had teh two
systems connected so that the 2000 system could share the
printer and backup to a drive on teh XP system. Something
mysterious happened and now the 2000 system can't find the
XP machine. I can connect fine from teh XP to the 2000.

I'm pretty much a novice when it comes to networking--any
ideas on troubleshooting this issue?

Thanks.
