Just purchased a Dell PC with XP Pro to function as a server for 15 celerons
with Windows 98. I set up a printer local to the Dell and set it up to be
shared. When I went to add printers on any of the workstations, the network
wasn't even showing up. I would get a message saying the network wasn't
even available. Everything is plugged in. Any thoughts out there?

15 clients? Windows XP Pro as a server?

You might get away with that if you had 10 clients.

I was having trouble setting up the first client.

Would I have been better off with NT?

This is a school. Is there a way to get a site license cheaply?

You would not be better off with NT, You would be better off with Server
2000 or 2003 as your file/print server (if I am reading your needs
correctly) and Windows XP Pro as your clients.

If you are a school, look into Educational Pricing. I cannot say for sure
where you would go - many resellers (a google search will reveal this) sell
the Microsoft products with cheaper educational pricing. Maybe a decent
place to start would be:

Yeah I have already gotten in touch with Microsoft on that score.

My dilemma is that I purchased XP pro with the Dell and I'm not sure what I
can do from here, but the reseller idea is a good one.

Thanks

what i have discovered has been is that you need to make sure that all of your network is under the same heading for example all in the work group named MSHOME so all of your network files would accessable with the printer share file but if you are running windows 98 you might have to go a seperate way in order for you to view the the network you must search for computers near you in order to see what coputers will have the access to the computers
