This problem was cause by one of the following, first AVG found and removed
the following files in the following path [ c:\windows\system32\spooldr.sys]
[c:\windows\system32\drivers\tcip.sys]
[c:\windows\system32\dllcache\tcpip.sys].
Also I opened an email file thinking it was an e-card from a friend that
turned out to be a virus, AVG caught an deleted the file [ecard.exe]
All worked well seemingly at this point, the problems didnt occur untill
after I installed the last 7 windows security updates date 8/15/-7, directly
after that my internet stopped working as did my network. Both my wireless
card and network card show connected but no activity will occur. Three other
computers on the network still have networking capabilities and Internet.
When running the ipconfig command I get the following;
[Windows IP Configuration
An internal error has occured: The request is not supported.
Additional information; unable to query host name]
So I tried resetting the Winsock with the following;
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html
Still no connectivity, any other ideas??

There are half a dozen remedies to LSP / Winsock corruption, and not one of them
is more effective than all of the others in every situation. Try the other
remedies, persistently.

Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
My email is AT DOT
actual address pchuck mvps org.

Thanks for the links, I followed all the suggestions on the site you
referenced. None of them found any problems or made any changes that helped,
and yes i tried most of them 3 times! The only suggestion I did not follow
was the registry rebuild because I'm not sure how to do that. Do i simply
replace my registry with the file using a text file? Thanks.

Double clicking on the .reg file, as downloaded, will merge it into the
registry. Be sure to download the right one.

If that doesn't help, reset TCP/IP, and re install the network hardware. Next,
we'll try a repair install.

Thanks for your help Chuck, none of the fixes worked so I ended up doing a
repair install and it worked like a charm, this was actually my first
thought but didnt know if it was correct procedure in this situation but it
did work. Thanks again.

Hi Shawn,

This error message happens when TCPIP.SYS is removed or altered. Antivirus
programs may 'heal' infected files by deleting them. Unfortunatly, none of
the antivirus apps require you to insert your XP install CD to replace any
critical files that need to be 'healed.'

Without TCPIP.SYS or NDIS.SYS in your \Windows\System32\Drivers directory,
you won't be able to run IPCONFIG without seeing the following message:

An internal error occurred: The request is not supported.

Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for further help.

Additional Information: Unable to query host name.

Simply copy the missing or corrupt TCPIP.SYS or NDIS.SYS from a working XP
system (Home/Pro/Media Center edition files are interchangable).

This would have resolved your problem.

FYI.
