Networking a Win ME PC and a WIN XP PC

I have two PCs I want to connect together: a Windows ME
PC with a PCI network card and a Windows XP Home Edition
with the same hardware. Both are made by the same company.
My question is, is it possible to directly connect the
two PCs together so that they can share files? I have
tried to do this with a Belkin Fast CAT5e RJ45 cable and
nothing came of it. Is there any way to do this? My
absolute last resort would be to connect the computers by
parallel or serial port, which I am unwilling to do (due
to the slow data transfer rates.)

You can't connect two computers directly to each other using a regular
Ethernet cable. You need a crossover Ethernet cable, which reverses
the transmit and receive wires between the ends.

Crossover cables are available at computer and office supply stores.
