Networking a PC and a Mac

Hi, rob -

Yes, it's possible - some of this is going to depend on
your network and which OS the Mac is using.

Windows XP doesn't have any services for Macintosh
available so what needs to happen is the Mac has to be
configured to participate in a Windows workgroup rather
than configuring the XP box to talk to the Mac.

If it were OS X I've got a link to a pretty good readme
on file sharing between PC and Mac but since you mention
this is an older machine I'm pretty sure you're gonna
need a third party program of some kind. AppleShare
won't connect to a Windows XP machine.

The quickest and easiest thing to do might be to just set
up an FTP server on the Mac or on the XP machine and
transfer files that way - but if you're looking for full
drag-and-drop functionality you might want to look at
something like Connectix' Virtual PC.

Since it's the Mac that needs to be configured to play
nice with Windows it might be a better idea to get
support from Apple or from an Apple online resource or
newsgroup. I'm happy to help but I'm afraid my knowledge
is a bit limited.

good luck!

if the only thing you are trying to accomplish is file
sharing, you might try emailing the files between
computers. I have a laptop with XP pro and my office
uses Mac OSX. The latest versions of MS Office are
installed on both machines and the transfer of files
between these two machines works very well. If you have
trouble opening files on the Mac, click once on the icon
and type command-I, click on "open with" and select the
proper application. This should only have to be done the
first time you receive a file in this format.
