I want to connect a laptop to a desktop that has XP and
use ICS. I have a dial up connection to the internet. I
know I need a NIC's card for both computers,but do I just
connect directly to each computer through the NIC's? If so
what kind of wiring do I use? I don't think I need a
router just using two computers. Remember I am using a
dial up connection.

Pleas help anyone!
Thanks

You either need a hub or a crossover cable. With a crossover cat5 cable you
can connect directly from NIC to NIC, with no device in between. With a hub
you would connect each NIC to the hub with straight-through cat5 cable.

You need a CAT5 Crossover patch cable. Make sure it is a CROSSOVER CABLE. You can buy 1 at any
computer/electronics (Radio shack) store. Yes your only option is to use ICS. It works but don't
expect the best LAN performance using ICS.

Here's an alternative option to ICS: get a broadband router that has a
serial port for connecting an external dial-up modem. The router can
connect to the Internet over the modem and share the connection
between any number of computer that have Ethernet connections to the
router. I have two such routers: SMC Barricade 7004BR and D-Link
DI-704.

Shootist, what does ICS have to do with LAN performance? I don't see
how it could have any effect.

Thanks for the information, where can I buy these routers
with the serial port for connecting to a dial up?

Look for them at computer and office supply stores. Even if those
specific model numbers aren't available, there should be others with
the same feature. Check the SMC and D-Link web sites for models and a
list of retailers.
