Networking a Condo

Hi,

I take care of the computer network for a construction company's office.
They sell condo's and would like to offer high-speed internet already
included with each unit. They asked me to come up with design, costs etc...

This is what I figured out, could you please comment on it. If I'm way off,
please let me know:

There are 138 units; I think I can get a 10Mbps (is this enough?) line
connection for around $2000/month (CAD). I would have to run one or maybe
two cables from each unit to the basement. Since this would happen during
construction, the pulling of the cable won't be too expensive, I'm
estimating $10,000. Would I have to terminate the cables myself? That would
take a lot of time. Is there a relatively easy way of doing this?

Then I would have to buy switches. 1 managed switch and a whole bunch of
hubs/switches. How much does this cost? Do I need to put up a firewall? I
don't want people running servers. Can I set up my firewall so that people
can use Kazaa and messenger etc?

Has anyone done something like this before?
Should the fee be included in the condo fees? Should people be able to opt
out? What about vacant units?

Lots of questions... thanks for reading.

Gerben Pauli.

You need to talk to some maufactures reps on the type of equipment to
install. They will let you know what kind of cable to run but also pull in a
spare or two (tv cable, twisted pair high quality phone line, cat5, other ?)
in case there are any changes. There are also building codes that have to be
followed, check with the general and the electrical contractors.

your company should have an electrial or phone sub contractor that can do
this for you at the same time as the other electrial is bieng done. Most
likely they have already done it before or have another sub that does it on
a regular basis.
