when i first install the xp to the 98 peer to peer
network i did not have any problems - used netbui on the
xp pc. some time later the 98 pc just stopped seeing the
xp computer and the xp see the 98 pc but gets not
accessible error on all but one pc. tried a system
restore to an earlier date - still did not work. then i
went to tcp/ip address but the 98 pc did all surf the
net. do not know what else to do.

XP wasn't really designed to use netbeui.
I would recommend using TCP/IP with file&printer sharing. Go to all machines
and make sure client fo rms networks, tcp/ip and file&printer sharing are
installed and nothing else if not necessary.

Make sure on the 98 machines, u select client for ms networks as the login
method and when it asks u for user/pass, do not press escape, enter the pass
or nothing and click ok to have access to the network.
