Hello everyone,
I am attempting to set up a small LAN with 3 PC's. I'm
using a 4 port netgear router. There are two XP pc's and
one 98 pc. The XP pc's are able to communicate and share
files but the 98 pc is unable to recognize the xp pc's and
the xp pc's are unable to recognize the 98 pc. I'm able
to ping all three from any pc I just cannot get them to
communicate or share files. Do I need to load some type
of networking protocol on the 98 pc to get it communicate
with the xp pc's? At another location the same 98 pc
communicates with a millenium pc via a linksys router
without issue, so I think it is an issue between 98 and XP.

Thanks for your help,
Branden

Branden,

you may have to re-enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP and make sure no
firewall is enabled on the internal connection in the XP
computers. For more details, please have a look at

you need to add netbeui to the windows xp machines for
them to see and communicat with the windows 98 machine on
the network. go here to learn how to add netbeui to
windows xp http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?
scid=kb;en-us;301041 this should solve that problem for
you.

I'm sorry, JAY, but I disagree. Nothing in Windows networking
requires, or has ever required NetBEUI. If it did, Microsoft wouldn't
have dropped support for NetBEUI in Windows XP. All versions of
Windows can network with each other using only TCP/IP.

I've written a web page with details:
