My family has windows 2000 and they are hooked up to a network, i have xp and
i cant seem to find out how to hook up to their network. Please tell me wats
going on.

You don't give us much info about the nature of the problem you are
experiencing. If you are talking about being able to access shared folders
or printers on Win2k machines, try:

1. Assuming that your family uses a workgroup rather than a domain, on the
XP machine change the workgroup name to match the name of the Win2k
workgroup. Right click My Computer, select Properties, select the Computer
Name tab, click the Change button.

2. On the Win2k machines create a user account which exactly matches the
user name and password you use to log onto the XP machine.

Hello Doug:
I'm sorry, the message was truncated:

What I am trying to do is simple, for those experienced in networking....

I have a Desktop Computer that is running Windows 2000 Professional. I am
wiring it directly to a router. I have a new Laptop that is running WINDOWS
XP. It is communicating with the Internet by way of a WIRELESS CONNECTION to
the same router used to connect the WINDOWS 2000 machine (through wired
means).

The 'wired' computer, the WINDOWS 2000 machine also has my laser printer
attached to it....

What I would like to be able to do is to have the laptop be able to send
print requests to the desktop computer through wireless means and be able to
access files on the desktop through wireless means.

If possible I'd like to have my wireless connection be 'secure' so that
neighbors can't piggyback on my wireless home network.

SO.....I need to know:

1. How to make the desktop (WINDOWS 2000 machine) recognize a request from
the Laptop (WINDOWS XP) in looking at files on the desktop and allowing a
user to send print files to the desktop from the laptop and have the desktop
recognize the sent files and print them.

2. I would like to have a 'secure' wireless network so as to now allow
neighbors access to my 'wireless network'. I have a D-Link G router.

Please let me know if additional detail is needed....both computers have
licensed valid Windows keys for both operating systems.

thank you again !

OK, I guessed right. In addition to what I previously said:

1. On the Win2k machine go to Start/Settings/Printers. Right click on the
printer icon and select Properties. Click the Sharing tab and select Shared
as -either accept the default name or change it to something you can easily
remember.

2. On the XP machine go to Printers and Faxes and start the Add Printer
wizard. Select Network printer, Next, select Connect to this Printer and
enter \\<Win2kComputerName>\PrinternameFrom#1, complete the wizard. If you
do not know the Win2k computer's name, on the Win2k machine right click My
Computer and select Properties. Click the Network Identification tab - the
name is listed there.

3. In order to share files and folders open Windows Explorer. You can
right click on a folder or an entire drive and select Sharing to create
shares.

4. In order for the above to work you need to have File and Printer sharing
enabled on the Win2k machine - this is the default. You should be able to
see shares on the Win2k machine from your laptop by Start/Run
\\Win2kComputerName or through My Network Places. Note, if the Win2k
machine has a firewall or other security software installed, you will
probably have to configure it to allow networking - how you do this is
product specific - consult the manual.

5. Your wireless router probably has WEP or WPA capability for
encryption/secuirty. However, you will have to consult your manual to
determine how to configure this. If you do not have a manual, you can
download it from the DLink site.
