Networking 2 XP Home machines

I am having a hard time getting two XP machines to share
over a network. I'm using a router. The machines see each
other occasionally in the Network Neighborhood screen.
Both have Guest accounts that are turned on. Both are
logged in as their respective administrators. I can ping
both computers as well as the router by their assigned IP
addresses, but not as their MS Network names.

Most frustratingly is that when the icons show up in the
network neighoborhood window, each computer tells the
other "___ workgroup in not accessible. You may not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the
network administrator, etc." I am the closest thing to
a "network administrator" as my home office has.

The connection to the "Network Places" fades in and out.
Some times I can see the other computer, sometimes I
can't.

Where are the permissions set in XP? Remember how they
were tucked away in the Manage feature on "My Computer"
in Windows 2000. Is it that simple again?

Please help.

Charlie,
I am having exactly the same problem except I am using a
wireless network. I can sometimes cure the problem by
rebooting either or both machines but this is not
satisfactory. Have you any suggestions from the feedback
that you got with your problem.
Thanks, Tony

I am getting a similar error, but also an additional one in same error
message (Not enough server storage is available to process this
command.) I can also access PC B from PC A, but not PC A from PC B,
and my network places always shows the shares. I can also ping via
NetBIOS name or IP address in both directions at all times. Your
problem however sounds more like a netbeui prob. Netbeui does not
exist in XP Home or Pro as a stand alone protocol (Although there is a
way to load it in Pro off of the Install CD), but there is a setting
in your network card properties for running netbeui over TCP/IP. Make
sure this is set on. As far as setting the permissions, this is XP
Home, there ARN'T any. Bill Gates does not want you really use XP Home
for networking, You can set it up for Simple Networking ONLY. It uses
the Guest account for authorization, I don't think it needs to
activated, just there. Bill expects you to use the Network Connection
Wizard to setup your connections, and there is plenty of help in how
to use it, but I cant find any help worth a sh__ for when it does not.
Exspecially for the errors we are getting, all thouse errors are
discussed for XP Pro not Home as if it can not get that kind of error.
I can find no place in XP Home, and do believe this is by design,
where I can tell it who has authorization and who does not, like you
can in XP Pro.

I would also give serious consideration to any kind of firewalls that
you may have running.

Good luck,

Ralph Malph

Make sure you UNINSTALL any 3rd party firewall software. Re-install it once
the network is working properly and THEN configure the firewall to take
account of the networked PC's.
