there are 2 PCs here in my home and we woukd like to have a network between
the two (file sharing, and internet). one is connected to the internet
through a router. we do have a cross cable but we do not know how to connect
the 2 PCs. i've tried searching in the internet but it seems that the "host"
PC must be directly connected to the internet but the "host" PC is connected
to a residential gateway (that's what it says). i tried selecting the otption
"disrectly connected to the internet" but it brings me to the screen that
says "Other computers cannot connect to the Internet through this computer.
In addition..."

i do not have any kind of experience in networking and alike so please bare
with me.. i may and will ask stupid questions... just a warning...

hope that someone can help me...

More info is needed.. are you on dialup or broadband?.. what is the model
name of your modem?.. do you connect through a router which is connected to
the modem, or is it a multi-port modem/router?.. what kind of cable connects
your computer to the router/modem?..

sorry.. this is my first tme in this kind of things... i'm using a broadband.
my modem is a PL-DSL1... i think its a modem/router.. the modem/router was
provided by our local isp.. a cross cable connects the pc to the
modem/router... i hope this helps...

here is a website with details...........

Look at the other pages as well ..what you are trying to do is called
Internet Conncection Sharing.
In order to network the 2 computers you would need a special Cat5 Crossover
Cable but you most likely only have one network connection on each
system...So a Router is what you would need to purchase. The 2 computer would
connect to the router and the router would connect to the DSL modem. If the
unit supplied by your ISP has 2 inputs for Computer then it is a
router....if only one its a modem.

Your connection device is a DSL modem.. to network using a crossover cable,
you will have to install a second Network Interface Card in your machine..
connect the crossover cable between the new NIC and the other computer, then
run the Network Wizard on the machine that has two network cards.. take the
option to create the diskette as instructed, and then run the diskette
contents on the other machine..
