Networked XP's sharing a scanner?

Can 2 computers one with xp pro one with xp home that are
networked through a dsl router share the xp pro's
scanner? The scanner is an Epson Perfection 636u.

Scanner sharing is only possible if the scanner manufacturer provides
software for that purpose. Windows doesn't have the built-in ability
to share a scanner.

Sharing a scanner isn't as useful as sharing a printer. You need to
be physically present at the scanner to operate it, so you're within a
few feet of the computer that it's connected to. You can scan images
into a shared folder on that computer and access the images from other
computers on the network.

Yes, this is true. Scanner usually have hardware buttons on them now. You
could probably set it up so you just walk up to the scanner, put in the
document, press the scan button and the image will be saved into a folder
that is shared.

However I am certain that during the XP setup routine it does specifically
mention that both printers and scanners can be shared.
Was it ever going to be a feature of the still image capture funtionality
(WIA) that was never included in the final product?
