Looking for input setting up a networked all-in-one printer as a recognized
scanning device in Vista Home premium. It found it as a printer no problem
with the add a printer wizard. Is there an add a scanner wizard hiding
somewhere? :)

Control Panel: Classic View: Scanners and Cameras?

Let me get this straight before I answer:
Is the multi-function printer/scanner directly connected to the computer you
wish to have it on?
Or is it connected remotely through another computer on your network?

There is the third choice. A (workgroup) Networked MFC with a (multi
port) Print server card (Brothers card looks like 3 device ports on
the same IP). No other PC needed, it is built in.

It is connected to the router on my network, hence network scanner. Worked a
treat on an all XP network but HP has seen fit to delay in preparing vista
versions of their software other than the bare essential interface (web
based) which has none of the capabilities that allow it to appear as a local
device as does the printer portion.

Ah, OK. I'm afraid you will probably have to wait for the updated driver(s)
from HP then. If they ever release them for your model.
As far as I am aware, Vista has no inherent ability to network a scanner
generically.

That's correct -- network-attached printer support is in-box. Other forms
of network-attached hardware, however, will rely on vendor drivers.
