I have a an HP 1610 printer attached to a linux pc running vmware. I have
several virtual machines that print to it using ipp. My problem is that I
don't know how to get the 1610 drivers installed on the windows xp virtual
machines. The vm will see the printer on the network but then the add
printer dialog asks for the driver. If I insert the install CD it cannot
find the driver on it. There are a quite a few inf files on the root of
the CD but none of them are recognized as the correct printer driver. The
printer is not listed in the drivers that come with xp. I tried inserting
the CD and running the setup routine directly but it will not finish
correctly without the printer attached to the pc.

Best method is to download the specific driver from HP. The file will
extract to a folder (you pick location (network software folder?)).
Sometimes the extraction folder has more than one folder inside.
Determine which folder has the optimum driver, and use that path.
Don't quote me on this but I have also got away with using the generic
HP PCL5 or PCL6 driver if all else fails.

To print only (not scanning) you can use an alternate print driver. See:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...docname=c00302767&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN,
you can use the DeskJet 990 drivers.
