I am trying to set up a network between two computers in my house. Do I have
to have LAN or an internet connection to do this?

You will need to have NIC (Network Interface) or LAN (Local Area Network )
card and Ethernet Cables to create communication between between the two
Computers in your Homenetwork unless it is just for an occasional file
transfer from one PC to the other PC.

You don't have to have Internet Connection for a Homenetwork to function
unless you want the WAN (Wide Area Network ie Internet ) avaialble to either
or both PCs in the network.

I have an internet connection through a belkin 54G Router where both
computers are connected through the cat5 cables to the router. I want to use
the router to connect the computers for printer and file sharing. I used the
network wizard and checked "other" for connection. The connection I chose
that seemed close to it was the hub connection. The computers still can't see
one another.
What else needs to be done. Both machines are running WinXp but one has only
SP1 installed.
What should I do to resolve this problem?

Please remember that the PC with WinXP SP2 has Windows Firewall . I suggest
updating the WinXP SP-1 to SP2 and make it fully updated. Please make sure
not to use any other third party Firewall AND Windows Firewall at the same
time. Remember Norton Antivirus 2006 and 2007 can sometimes mess up things.

Are both PCs WinXP Pro or Home? Important to post all these details to get
the best advice from a Newsgroup :-)

Since you have a Belkin 54G wireless router (but not used in wireless mode
probably because of lack of wireless adapters in the PCs , I guess] where
both PCs are now connected through Cat5 Ethernet cables [the cables must be
"Straight -through" and NOT Crossover Cat5s] you must be able to have both
a Homenetwork and ability to access internet independently of each other via
the broadband modem and Boradband ISP.

In the Networksetup Wizard use the 2nd option (.) This Computer connects to
the internet through a "residential gateway" (a 'sophisticated' name for a
"router"!) or another computer on my network .

Then complete the wizard choosing Files and Printer sharing option . Good
luck

Hi
Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings,
http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html

As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is
allowed to be shared.
