With just the information you have given us, it's hard to know which blanks
to fill in. Were you someone's PHB, I would have to advise you to buy NICs,
cables and a router. ;-) Is the host running Windows 2000 Server, and is it
configured as a domain controller? Or, did you want to go peer-to-peer? Is
the client XP Home or XP Pro?
Being cheap, I generally start with my local library system. I've managed to
borrow books for grad school that way. If you go into your local bookstore,
my best advice is to take the time to read chapter one of any book while you
are in the store. If the author can lose you in chapter one before you buy
the book, you probably aren't going to get much further after you buy it.
But first, the web. There are great sites like
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/, which has a how to section at
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/howto/. And, of course, there's
microsoft.com. Just linking around the XP site, I found
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/columns/honeycutt/may29.asp,
and, at the bottom of it, half a dozen links you might want to look at.
