Question #1: Do windows workgroups only work on one
network segment?
The workgroup will work. Type the machine and path from the "Run" line
preceeded by two "\" and it will come up. Example:
\\MyMachineName\MyFolderName
Netbios naming will not work over subnets without a WINS Server that all
machines commonly use. Without WINS you would have to use the LMHosts files
on each machine or access machines in the opposite subnet by IP#. Example:
\\192.168.1.1\MyFolderName
Network browsing (Network Places) will not work.
Multiple subnets require a Master Browser in each subnet (elected
automatically) and a single Domain Master Browser anywhere on the system
which will always be one of the Domain Controllers. Since you have no
Domain, hence no Domain Controller, hence no Domain Master Browser. It is
the job of the Domain Master Browser to collect and merge the "Browse Lists"
from each subnet's Master Browser to create a complete listing.
Question#2: If workgroups are supposed to work on
multiple network segments, why would the machines in
other segments not appear in the Workgroup list?
