Last week I bought a new computer and it has Windows XP
installed on it. This is the first machine with Windows
XP I own. My previus computers (3) all have Windows 98
installed on it.
These computers where all connected via a 100mb network
witch worked fine. The computers are connected on a shere
level. One has the printer connected and the others can
use this printer. Also shared are some maps on the
computers so information can be exchanged between them.
Internet is NOT shered, this is working on only one
computer and this will stay like this.
I configured the network on the new XP machine. Sharing
the DVD Writwer and some maps on the harddisk.
Then I and connected it to the network via the hub. Two
of my old computers are still connected to this hub and
they can "see" each other, but not the new XP computer.
On the XP computer I can not see any network at all, it
looks like it's not there. I have set fixed IP adresses
on each computer to speedup the startup of the computer.
When I change the IP adress on XP computer to the adress
of one of the 98 machines the XP computer gives an
error, "The IP adress is already in use". This error
seems to say that the XP computer does see the network
and the other computers.
What have I overlooked or forgotten to set? It has taken
me almost the whole weekend but it still does not work.
Any help will be very welkom.

Win9x can't see Win2000/XP

By default, Win2000/XP disables NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) for selected
clients. In a peer-to-peer network without WINS, Win9x will be unable to
browse, locate, or create file and print share connections to a Windows 2000
computer with NetBIOS disabled. So, you must setup the Win2000/XP to uses
NetBIOS over TCP/IP to communicate with prior versions of Windows NT and
other clients, such as Microsoft Windows 95. Alternatively, you may want to
add NetBEUI on all workstations in the peer-to-peer network.
