I cannot get my two computers networked. I'm using a
Netgear router. Workgroups are set for MSHOME and I've
done all the sharing of the folders. Windows 98 is set
up for file sharing. They still don't recognize each
other. Please help!

Run XP's Network Setup Wizard on both computers and tell it that they
connect to the Internet through a "residential gateway".

Make sure that the network connection on XP is enabled and connected.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the feedback. I have the exact same problem. I have two XP Pro
desktops. Neither can see eachother.

One connects via Linksys Wireless to the WAP, the other is hard wired to the
WAP (has a 4 port hub). Both can get to the web. Both can see the
SnapServer. Both see themselves; only cannot see eachother.

I have a friend that has the same problem using a Microsoft WAP + 4-Port hub
too. Two XP computers cannot see eachother.

The Wizard has been run on all computers choosing Residential Gateway to no
avail. I even went as far as installing NetBeui on all computers to see if
that would override the TCP/IP, but that didn't help either.

All Windows Updates are current on all machines.

What am I missing?

Thanks.

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.

Hello

I have had the same problems.
It is because you do not have a browser as well as other
services working.

Right click on My Computer and choose Manage.
In the new window choose Services.
In services choose Computer Browser.
It is most probably not running. Look at dependencies.
It will tell you what Browser depends on.
Start those services and make them AUTOMATIC.
Net Logon most probably will not start, unless you are on
a domain.

You should now be able to see all computers.
If not look at all dependencies and start the relevant
ones.

You might still have as I have had, a problem copying and
moving files, depending on the direction you are going in.
I keep getting ACCESS DENIED messages.

This is because you need to give full access to the shares.
