Hi

I have a small network at home,

Main Computer WINDOWS XP PRO
Kids Computer WINDOWS XP PRO
My Laptop WINDOWS 2000 PRO

These are all connected through a Linksys Broadband/
Wireless Router to the internet from a Cable Modem. The
two desktops are wired through ethernet connections and
the laptop can be either wired or wireless. All
computers can get on the net, no problem.

However, although I have disabled the XP firewall on the
XP desktops, uninstalled zone-alarm and closed Panda Anti
Virus software and shared all the drives, the network
does not work.

When i try to access the Workgroup on the main computer
an error message saying I do not have permission comes on
it says "The list of servers for this workgroup is not
currrently available"? (I am the only user of each
computer, therfore the Administrator in each case).
I can sometimes see the kids computer, but cannot gain
access to it, permission is denied, path not found. I
cannot see the laptop at all.

From the kids computer I cannot see the main computer, or
the laptop, but a previous shortcut to the main computer
does let me gain access.

From the laptop I cannot see the main computer or kids
computer, but an old shortcut does let me into the main
computer, but I cannot transfer files.

I am very confused and would really appreciate some
advice here. I have looked at the advice on offer and
tried to follow it but with no luck. Is it possible to
wipe out or delete all of the existing network
connections etc and start again?

Thanks for some help out there, cheers.

have you configered IP Addresses for each computer

if not you have seek for the router Ip address
look for something like
192.168.0.1

and set other computers IP address
like
192.168.0.10
192.168.0.20
192.168.0.30

i think you should be able then to solve it

shafeek saati

Alan, I have a similar problem, with three computers, 1
of which is a notebook, all hardwired through a linksys
switch. None will see each other, but all will access my
ADSL individually, but not at one time. If you get any
answeres to your problem, I would really appreciate it if
you could forward any solutions to me. It may help me
figure out where my problem is.

Thanks, Carl

1. NTFS won't allow you access to certain disk areas with
the standards network setup.
2. Have you enabled sharing of yourdrives/files?
3. Do you have the same workgroup name for each computer?
4. Can you ping all of the computers?

I've written a web site that should help you solve the problem:

Windows XP Network Troubleshooting
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot

Please pay particular attention to these sections:

1. Firewalls: Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection
Firewall on local area network connections -- it's for use only on a
direct modem connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all
other firewalls while troubleshooting.

2. Protocols: Use only one for File and Printer Sharing. If the
network needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing
from all but one of them.

3. NetBIOS over TCP/IP: Make sure that it's enabled on all computers.
