I have hours and hours trying to network Vista Premium to an xp machine. I
have installed LLPT, closed firewalls, established workgroups, shared
everything I can think of. Sometimes Vista machine can see the xp machine but
not access it, other times it cannot even see it. Why does Microsoft make it
sooooo hard to network?

Help will be appreciated.

Peter,

Lets look at the logs from "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all", from each
computer, and start to diagnose the problem. Read this article, and linked
articles, and follow instructions precisely (download browstat!):

You may also want to read about layered network troubleshooting.

I can run browstat status and ipconfig, but I can't run the "browstat status

Aha. That's the "access denied".

OK, try "browstat status >browstat.txt". Then you'll have to find the file (or
try "notepad browstat.txt"). Ditto "ipconfig /all >ipconfig.txt".

"Access is denied" on both. I can see that you are trying to get the results
of the commands to a text file. I read your article. I wonder how else we can
do that? Thanks for your time, by the way.

I got it Chuck. I "marked" it, copied it to Notepad. Now what? Should I do
it for both machines, Vista and XP?

Right, Peter. Both "browstat status" and "ipconfig /all" from both computers.

Do you want me to send the notepad files or do you want me to cut and paste
into this thread. I don't know how to attach a file to a reply.

Copy and Paste should work fine, Peter.

Chuck,

All of the computers are communicating now. Two Vista, one XP. The Browstat
is showing okay on the XP computer now. That computer seemed to be the
problem. I don't know how it happened though. I went through the help menu on
the XP computer and it did mention logging off and back on, and that may have
made the difference. Help said I may need to log onto the network. Also
turned the Windows Livecare firewall from automatic to off. I am going to
switch it back to see if that makes a difference.

Thanks for your help.

Chuck,

I figured it out. Live OneCare has to have it's firewall off, then I have to
log off and back on which logs me on to the network. Or, I can have the
firewall on, set the advanced settings in the OneCare Firewall to
automatically adjust settings to allow a connection to a Vista computer on
the network (there is a checkbox for that).

Thanks again.
