network tuns to sludge every few hours

Any thoughts concerning the following scenario:

An associate operates a small Win2000 network (couple
Active Directory servers at a Washington site and 1 at an
Oregon site, an exchange server, and some file servers)
that spans 2 sites connected via a couple T1 lines. It
seems that everyday the network hangs between 7-9 am, 1130-
after lunch, and around 230pm. Emails take 20 minutes to
open, larger AutoCADD files open like sludge, and even
localized Word processing lags. This has been going on
for months and people are getting seriously annoyed. The
network is divided into 3 subnets (1 for the Washington
site, 1 for the WAN link, and 1 for Oregon). This problem
only occurs at the Washington site.

Thanks for any insights,

Look at the file replication times for your domain
controllers.. There could be alot of info transfered
between sites if you only replicate 3 times a day..

It sounds to me like you have a bad network card
somewhere, when a network card is going bad it can suck
up bandwith and make the whole network slow. See who is
on at those times, and try switching out network cards

Thanks, Tara. I've recommended the admin run a network
analyzer. This should narrow down the source ip address
considerably when the output is evaluated.

I don't think that there is a "default Time". There are 4
choices,
1. Never
2. Once Per hour
3. Twice Per hour
4. Four Times Per hour

After futher looking, this might not be the problem you
are having. Do you have any sniffer tools? Any log files
from a firewall/routers, you can look at to see what type
of traffic is occuring? Is the traffic that seems to be
slow, local or WAN traffic?

Good direction. I just mentioned to "Tara" that I advised
the admin drop an analyzer on it pronto. About
replication, I seem to remember having more control over
the timing. It's been a while since I played with it.

Given the clear interruption of processing on local PCs,
it's my theory that a device is slamming the network with
ICMP, UDP, or some request like that. Even MS Word lags
during the molasses moments. To keep capital expenses
down, I told him to download ethereal and run that puppy
all day. I'm hoping we'll see a pattern directly related
to a source IP address.

let me know how things work out..
