Network sluggish when all computers on are

I currently have a cable modem connection going into my
router with 2 xp home machines(cable modem goes into the
router which then splits into the 2 machines). When just
one machine is one everything runs smooth(browsing etc),
but when I turn both on everything lags, I receive alot of
timeout errors when surfing and the game we play suffers
alot of lag and slows down. Is there any setting that I
should check to see whats causing this?
Or any advise about this?

Hello
are you running wireless that could be the problem if it
is the 802.11b
I am running the same wired setup(CAT5 cable)with 4
puters connected and see no problem with speed if 1 or
all 4 are connected

nope it is a wired connection, and it does not matter
which computer is on by itself(either one works fast then
when the other is on boom slowdown).

If UPnP is enabled on the XP PCs for the router, try disabling it.
UPnP sometimes generates a lot of LAN traffic.
