Network Slowness

We just upgraded our network from NT 4 to Windows 2000 Server, with Service Pack 4. We brought in a new machine for the DC and the remaining servers are NT 4. The network previously ran on static IPs with LMHost files and we have changed that to use DHCP and WINS from the new DC.

We have noticed substantial slowness related to two different things.

1.) Windows Explorer on the client machines, takes its sweet time. In some instances it is very fast, but when you try to view something you haven't viewed in awhile, it churns for awhile before it displays. The client machines are Win 2000 and XP. Am I missing somethings here?

2.) Our email has slowed down. We run Exchange 5.5 on a seperate DMZ zone. Users have indicated that a message that the "Exchange Server cannot be reached, Network Problems are preventing connection" sometimes comes up.

Any thoughts or suggestions that you have would be wonderful.

Thank,
Drew

DNS, set up a Local Win2k DNS server with a Primary Zone for your network.
Win2k and XP use DNS for everything.

Yes, DNS. Win2K and WinXP rely on DNS. They try DNS first before hosts or
lmhosts or WINS or anything like that, so it would take longer, because
they're checking DNS for a computer or domain name, and coming up blank, so
they're going to step 2. Flip the switch on DNS and see if it speeds you up.
Chances are it will.

Sorry. Dunno.
