HELLO AND PLEASE HELP.

I just recently started encountering this problem.
Before I moved, my network worked great. After I moved
and hooked the computers back up, I ran into the
following problem. I pulled this symptom from the
knowledge FAQ base.

When you attempt to browse the network by means of either
My Network Places or a program (that can access network
resources), your computer may experience an extreme
slowdown or the program may display a "Not Responding"
message

They said the cause is I have Kaspersky antivirus
installed on my PC. I don't. If I wait 5 minutes, the
program responds. Either accessing the drives through
the 'My Computer' or Nero. I just reformatted in hope it
would solve the problem it hasn't. This only happens on
1 of the machines. I have 3 PC's. 1 is a Dell 600SC
running Windows 2003 Server. My computer has Windows XP
Pro, and the second computer has the same. It is the
second computer that has this problem. I can't figure
out why. I have tried so many different things. Please
help.

I have experienced similar problem. My occurs because I have several machines on a network and have many mapped drives. If one of the computers is off or the mapped drive does not have a connection it seems to cause this problem. I have to make sure that all mapped drives are connected or else I may enconter this problem.

Hope this helps

Hi,
I posted similar issue several months ago and again a few
days ago with no responses....until yesterday.

I had a hunch of what the fix was but didn't want to do
it for fear that I would cause other issues. This
gentleman was nice enough to respond to me directly with
the solution that confirmed my hunch.

I changed my systems last night and it worked like a
charm. This guy fixed it a few months ago at this
offices and said it is still working great.

Try this:
Install Netbeui and make it the default...I know Netbeui
is no longer supported by Microsoft but until they fix
the slow tcp/ip protocol in XP....I'm gonna keep using
Netbeui for my LAN side. It's not available
automatically, you have to copy it from the XP disk to
the appropriate folders, then it will be available to add.

1. From the XP cd, go to the following
folder: /valueadd/msft/net/netbeui
2. copy nbf.sys to c:/windows/system32/drivers
3. copy netnbf.inf to c:/windows/inf
4. open my network places, click view network
connections, and open the properties of your network
connection. Click install>protocol to add the Netbeui
protocol that will now show up. Click OK
5. On the top menu of the network connections window,
click the pulldown Advanced>then Advanced Settings. Make
sure that Netbeui is listed first before TCP/IP. It
should be already. If it isn't, highlight the Netbeui
protocol and click the up arrow that is to the right of
the window.
6. Restart all the affected machines.

That should be it...you now have the access times you're
used to with pre-XP machines.

Good Luck....let me know how it works out for you.

If the server is off then there will definitely be a slowdown as you attempt
to contact it and wait for a response. Not to much you can do about that.

The server is always on. I only experience this slowdown
from one of my machines. The other machine which runs
the same version of windows does not have any problems
