network slow

Hi

We have ethernet network having nodes connected to 10 Mbps
Hub. When a system copies a big file, all other systems
in the network became slow.

Please give me a brief explaination on this.

Your hub shares bandwidth with all computers hooked to it
not allowing the "heartbeat" to go to switched nodes
because of having no switch, meaning that all ports listen
to any incoming message (file transfers, etc.)
