Network slow down

The Grim Reaper

Hi all,

I'm running 2 PC's with XP + SP2, connected by a NetGear ADSL router - which
contains a 100 Mbps 4 port switch.
In the last few weeks, I've noticed a dramatic slow down in LAN transmission
speeds.
I have not tweaked any settings to do with the network - that I'm aware of.
If I copy a large file - a gig or so - Windows used to tell me "4 minutes
remaining... " and off it went.
Now, if I copy the same sort of size, I get 15 minutes of waiting time.
I've used a multitude of network monitors and other tools, but Task
Manager's networking tab has given the best information (!!) - telling me
that only 15% to 18% of the 100Mbps bandwidth.
I'm pretty sure that everything's connected at 100 Mbps full duplex on the
router, a further switch, both PC's and an occasionally connected laptop.

1) Anyone recommend any software that gives a clear view of what's going on
with a LAN?

2) I've been told by friends that "networks randomly slowing down" is a
sign of switches "wearing out" - which as an engineer I find hard to
believe - anyone read about/seen/heard of anything like that??

3) Are there any decent tweakers anyone can recommend to "reset" the
Windows parameters back to default (MTU, TCP/IP parameters, LANManServer
settings, etc.) ??

Thanks for any help.

Yes, I have... many many many months ago. But I've never seen the tunneling
adaptors before.

You think re-installing or just un-installing IPv6 would help?? Come to
think of it... just cos I've got it installed on 3 machines on this network,
is it actually doing anything?!!?

Just for other people's information...

I uninstalled TCP/IP v6 completely, and noticed a good increase in LAN
traffic speed.
Around 60% bandwidth as opposed to 20%, when copying several large folders
of varying size, containing various size files, in parallel via Explorer.

Now does anyone know why v6 would slow down a network?? Is it cos it's
conflicting with v4??
