network shares slow since adding a trust????

I have several offices that are configured as different forests.

I have created two-way trusts between them, I can maps shares between
offices and (after setting up permissions/groups) I can access the
shares.

DNS seems to be resolving correctly.

Now, when users in Office_A login to Office_A, and then try to open
their mapped drives in Office_A's server, it takes about 30 seconds
before the files are shown the first time. Once they are shown the first
time they can quickly access them - if a couple hours passes this same
thing happens (slow first access, then quick).

I've double checked DNS, etc...

I even reapplied 2000 SP4 and SP1 to the workstations (all workstations
are XP Prof) all servers are 2000 Server.

Any ideas?

I would look the network traffic with network monitor. This would give you
some idea of what is going on on the wire and if there are timeouts in
server response.
