First I'm not sure is this because of server or office

I'm admistrating about 100 workstations and several servers.

one of dc works allso as a fileserver, I've 3 dcs, all of them are window
2000 std servers with latest updates

Moust of work stations are Windos XP and some w2k, all Win XPs are installed
with RIS and I've workin WSUS server that keeps all workstations up to date.

Problem is, some users in some workstions can't open Office documents from
network share, they get message "file is locked or crypted and can't be
opened" (that is tranlated from Finnish office, I can't be sure how that is
in english office) They can open those files from other computers, so it's
not about accounts.

There is 9 problem computers, some just installed and some old installations
both w2k and XP, they are all a round building differen swicthes.

Over all network performance is week with those computers

Any advised is wellcome

They usually get those documents open when they tried several times.

Problem is only with tose documents which are allready opened

When a document is opened it is "locked" for editing by the first person
that opens it so more than one person is not writing to the same document at
the same time.

When the first person closes the document, then the second person can open
and edit the document.
Any advised is wellcome

Set a time when person 1 can have the document open that does not overlap
the time person 2 has to edit the document?

Thanks, but it is not the problem. Biggest problems that they can't open
those documents.

They don't need to edit them, moust problematic documents are price list,
sales persons use them, they just need to check prices not to edit.

Normally windows ask in this situation something like this, document is
open wouyld you like open it with read only access, get annoncement when its
editaple and cancel

I relized that problem is DFS, all normal shares work as they should.

But still how to fix this ??

You could try setting the read-only attribute on those files, or perhaps you
could create them as PDF files.

I think you need to really explain your environment.

In your original post there is no mention of DFS. What has DFS got to do
with this?

Network shares they used are mapped from dfs like this \\dfsroot\sharename etc.

I tried to map directly with unc path like net use k: \\servername\sharename\

Everything worket without any performance or file lock problems

So I just modified logon.bat to use those and no one has had any problems.

There is 2 identical server that has DFS and DC roles, there is no dfs
replicas

Servers are quite ok two xeon cpus and raid 5 with 5 hard drives

No changes has made execpt windows updates w2k srv ;)
